Blindsided
In 2015, the Portland City Council approved a policy called
“Vision Zero”—an ambitious set of traffic safety investments meant to eliminate deaths in the streets by 2025. The plan has since accounted for hundreds of
millions in spending, from new crosswalk lights to speed cameras and miles of bike
paths. But despite the best intentions of the city and the Department
of Transportation, traffic deaths continue to rise. This photo essay explores the
tolls that traffic deaths, DUI’s and transportation disparities take on Portlanders,
and what changes are being called for in the impacted communities.
