Every Baltimorean knows where they were when they learned the Key Bridge fell. In the early morning of March 26, 2024, the Dali cargo ship struck a pier of the nearly five-decade old Francis Scott Key Bridge after suffering a power blackout, killing six workers who were filling potholes on the bridge, just over 30 seconds after vehicular traffic was stopped on both ends by the Maryland Transportation Police. The collapse and its impact on the Port of Baltimore became the most costly maritime collision in modern history, and the rebuilding process is expected to take at least four years. But the tragedy also united Baltimore and the nation in grief and disbelief.
